HET Observer Tips

Below are a few tips for getting good data from the HET.

Choose an instrument:

HRS Tips
  • Read the data reduction tips before submitting your Phase I. This will give you an idea of the types of calibrations that you will need for your target.
  • Look at the calibration page to see what we provide for free before you request specific standard stars.
  • We will have more success at keeping your target positioned and focused if you have a bright guide star near your science target. See our performance page for guiding limits. Do not assume that because our limit is 16th magnitude that a 15th magnitude star is fine! If your target lacks a bright (<14th magnitude) star within 1.5 arcmin, then you should rethink your observing strategy.

  • We will have more success at keeping your target positioned and focused if you have a bright guide star near your science target. See our performance page for guiding limits. Do not assume that because our limit is 18th magnitude that a 17th magnitude is fine! If your target lacks a bright (<16th magnitude) star within 1.5 arcmin, then you should check to see if we could move your science target along the slit to bring a bright star in reach.
